Environmental Practices of the Inn

The Inn at Folkston incorporates the concepts of "green" operation in their inn as much as possible.

Many tourists are interested in patronizing businesses with environmentally sensitive practices. The innkeepers at The Inn at Folkston incorporate the concepts of "green" operation in their inn as much as possible. Here are some of the programs we have in place to help protect the environment.

We participate in the City of Folkston's recycling program and provide containers so that our guests can participate in the Inn's recycling collection program.

Kitchen food waste is composted and used in our gardens.

We are members of "Green" Hotels Association.

Environmentally safe cleaning agents from The Clean Environment Company are used.

The former innkeepers are founding members of the Georgia Nature-Based Tourism Association. Genna was its first secretary and created its monthly newsletter, Footprints & Paddledrips.

Our organic herb garden produces many of the herbs used in breakfast preparation along with seasonal fresh fruit.

We provide water, shelter, and food for birds and animals. Our 2-acre property has been registered as a "Backyard Wildlife Habitat" by the National Wildlife Federation.

Guests are asked to participate in our towel and bedding program through the use of guestroom cards from the "Green" Hotels Association.

All-cotton linens are used on our guest beds. Our down and feather comforters with all-cotton covers are allergy free.

Rooms have removable Oriental carpets for allergy sensitive people. All floors are heart pine or tile. Most guest rooms have low water volume flush toilets.

The innkeepers work with tour guides, outfitters and other business people who practice conservation and promote preservation of our natural resources.

No pesticides are used in our gardens.

The innkeepers are familiar with most dietary restrictions their guests may have and are happy to prepare special meals to meet their needs.

The Inn belongs to Co-op America Business Network (included in Co-op America's National Green Pages).

The Inn is included in Atlanta Natural Pages, a resource directory for those interested in a healthy lifestyle, the environment, and natural health.

In 2002, The Inn at Folkston was voted "Most Environmentally Friendly" and listed in Arrington Journal's Book of Lists.

Wildlife activity at the Okefenokee Swamp and special events such as the annual bird festival "Wings Over The Swamp" are published under our Inn's "Events" section.

This list is not all-inclusive and is continually updated. The innkeepers are always reassessing their environmental programs and implementing changes and improvements on an ongoing basis.
